Woodland and Grounds

Toddler friendly holidays and child friendly holidays need toddler and child friendly things to do. Here are our thoughts on how that works at Pitt Farm.

In About a Boy, Nick Hornby’s lead character Will structures his days in units of time…”Taking a bath: one unit, watching countdown: one unit, web-based research: 2 units, exercising: 3 units, having my hair carefully disheveled: 4 units. It’s amazing how the day fills up, and I often wonder, to be absolutely honest, if I’d ever have time for a job; how do people cram them in?”

The antithesis of Will’s life is life with a pre-schooler (or a tribe / gaggle / bundle of them if you’re blessed enough to have more than one); where often a moment to visit the bathroom alone can be considered a treat. So different to Will’s life yet so relevant to us in terms of a means of getting through the day. This morning, for example: Breakfast (2 units), Hey Duggee (2 units), sweeping the leaves (4 units) playdoh *sighs* (3 units); morning snack (1 unit) (yes its only 10:30am)…you get the picture.

Not regimented or timed, but basically pushing the boredom / energy thresholds to the limit before moving onto something else.

On holiday it’s no different but it can be trickier when in less familiar surroundings. A day at the beach; a trip to the local theme park or zoo; a steam train ride in Kingswear or Buckfastleigh are all great days out but you often need to fill a few units when back at your cottage. Perhaps when lunch is cooking; you’re waiting for everyone to be ready to go out or just counting the minutes until bedtime (theirs not yours). At Pitt Farm, we can’t promise to fill all of the units of time when you’re on holiday (we’ve got the beaches, towns, and local attractions for that) but we are doing our best to make sure there’s enough to do in between those fantastic days out. Here are some recommended toddler friendly holiday units of time:

A swing and slide in the playground – 2 units

A dip in the indoor heated pool – 5 units

Exploring the streams – 4 units

A walk along the bridleway to the local village – 5 units

Checking in on the farm animals – 2 units

Racing Car Selfie – 1 Unit

A game of “Hide and Seek” in the woodland – 3 units (or more)

Investigating the toys in the cottage – 3 units

Visiting the honesty shop – 1 unit

Cbeebies / CBBC – 2 units
